Raw materials derived from castor oil are commonly used by producers of adhesives, elastomers, and coatings. Here are some important derivatives used in these industries:
Hydrogenated Castor Oil (HCO) is a versatile ingredient used in various applications. It’s made by treating castor oil with hydrogen. HCO can be added to powder coatings to control flow and dispersion, used as a coating agent for paper, and included in hot-melt adhesives used in packaging, bookbinding, and carpet backing. It’s also used in sealants, thick film coatings, and dielectric compounds. HCO is valued for its workability, stability over time, high melting point, and resistance to water.
Deodorized Castor Oil is castor oil that has been treated to remove any unwanted odors. It’s an excellent drying agent used in paints, varnishes, coatings, printing inks, linoleum, and oil cloth manufacturing.
Polyurethane (PU) adhesive is known for its strong adhesion, flexibility, and insulation properties. PU adhesive based on castor oil is made by blending polyol and prepolymer (castor oil-based) and allowing them to react, forming polyurethane. This adhesive has various applications, including in glued laminated timber. Current research is exploring the potential for further developments in this area.
